When ExxonMobil proposed to reverse an 80 year old pipeline to bring tar sands oil from Canada through Vermont, NH and Maine, activists organized. Tar Sands, some of the dirtiest oil in the world, would have put Sebago Lake, the drinking water source for all of Southern Maine and the air of the Portland area at risk. So residents organized a massive volunteer effort to build support and ultimately convinced the South Portland City Council to bar new oil construction in their port.
