The Jamaica Plain 350 node and Clean Water Action, Elder Climate Action, Environmental League of Massachusetts, JP Forum, Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light, Massachusetts Campaign for a Clean Energy Future, Mothers Out Front, and Our Climate are sponsoring a Jamaica Plain Climate Town Hall with Representative Jeffrey Sánchez on July 12, 2018 at First Church Unitarian Universalist, 8 Eliot Street, from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Entry is via side door.
Environmental nonprofits and community residents have arranged the Town Hall to provide an opportunity to demonstrate community concern about climate change and support for legislation currently being considered in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The House has until the end of July to act on pending items. Representative Jeffrey Sánchez is the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee.
At the Town Hall, high school activists will present a petition from area residents asking the Massachusetts Legislature to support carbon pricing, assessed as the single most effective way to achieve carbon pollution reductions. A local faith leader will discuss the Interfaith Call for Carbon Pricing. Many of the groups organizing the event have been actively supporting a Bill by Representative Jennifer Benson (D- Lunenberg) places a fee on fossil fuel imports to the state, returning 80% of the money raised to Massachusetts residents and businesses and investing 20% in new clean energy infrastructure.
Event organizers plan to ask Representative Sánchez if he supports increasing the percentage of power that utilities must buy from renewable sources. They will ask Sánchez to oppose new gas pipelines and to support increased access to solar for low income people, renters, and others cannot put solar panels on their own roof.
Refreshments will be provided.
