MA North American Megadam Resistance Alliance Event
November 21, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - November 22, 2019 @ 1:00 am UTC+0
The North American Megadam Resistance Alliance is currently preparing for the third annual Megadams = Megadamage Speaking Tour. This tour lasting from November 18th through 29th, 2019 will bring Indigenous speakers from hydro-affected communities in Canada to the Northeast United States to speak with key decision makers and the general public on the topic of Canadian hydropower and the harmful effects it has on their communities. The tour culminates with these individuals making speeches at the 50th Annual National Day of Mourning (DOM) in Plymouth, MA on Thanksgiving Day. The DOM annual event is hosted by the United American Indians of New England (www.uaine.org) and in recent years has had almost 1,000 attendees.
The Megadams = Megadamage Tour connects our fight here in New England with the struggles of front-line Indigenous communities and their allies in Canada. We will be able to hear first-hand about the true impacts of Canadian hydropower from those who have experienced them for decades. This is an environmental and social justice issue. Fluctuating river levels, flooding of Indigenous land, cultural genocide and contamination of food webs through methylmercury poisoning are only some of hydropower’s detrimental effects. American consumers who buy electricity produced by Hydro-Quebec and Nalcor Energy will be participating in the environmental and human harms inflicted on our neighbors to the north.
This tour will be conducted in coordination with the ongoing resistance to the transmission corridors that are proposed to bring Canadian hydro to the United States such as Central Maine Power’s proposed transmission line through Maine (NECEC), Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE), and the Vermont Clean Energy Link.
